I'm guessing that the Windows update deleted my original audio driver and installed the wrong one, which it then failed to recognise.

The only two audio drivers I have running at the moment are the 'Intel Display Audio' and the 'Realtek High Definition Audio' which are both under the 'Sound, video and games controllers' section. The Device Manager for that install shows "Creative AudioPCI (ES1371,ES1373) (WDM)" in addition to the devices mentioned above. Note: I did a clean install of XP SP2 from my OEM install disk and the sound works fine. Normally, if the on-board is enabled in the BIOS but no hardware specific driver is installed Windows will install the generic 'High Definition Audio Codec' driver.
The first thing to check is the BIOS to verify the on-board audio is enabled. My only prior experience was with MS VPC. The Intel Display Audio is ONLY for HDMI Audio and not the regular PC audio. The virtual laptop launches properly and operates great! (I am new to VMware. I could easily restore an old backup or use a clean install, but Im still clinging on to the hope.

I am using Fusion on my Mac OSX Host, and have installed VMware Tools and Upgraded the Virtual Machine on my virtual laptop. in device manager, while Windows reports 'No Audio Output Device is installed', and there are no outputs (or inputs) listed in the sound panel (yes, weve checked 'disabled' and 'disconnected' devices, too) I hope well get to the bottom of this.
I have just finished converting my physical laptop to a virtual laptop using VMware Converter 3.01.
